For your computer, you can use a velcro leash to leash it to the desk and keep it from falling and hurting someone. In the case of an earthquake you need to shut off you gas, you should keep a wrench attached to your gas line to turn it off in the case of an earthquake. You just need to turn it a quarter turn and it turns off, preventing fires. Those are all things you can do to help your home in an earthquake in 1989.
