The biggest wave ever recorded occurred after an earth quake in Lituya Bay, Alaska. This happened in 1958, and the earthquake measured 8.3 on the Richter scale. The earthquake shook 40 million cubic yards of dirt and glacier off a mountainside at the head of the bay. When this debris hit the water a 1,720 (!!!!) foot wave was created and washed over the headland. Amazingly only 3 fishing boats were in the bay at that time, and only two people were killed. In the photograph above, you can see how the all of the trees and soil was cleanly swept away when the wave hit the headland.
