The image on the top is basalt, and the one below it is granite.
There were some questions we recieved in class today and a couple of them referenced basalt and granite, which I wasn't very familiar with so...Granite is a intrusive felsic igneous rock, meaning it was formed inside earth, has large visible crystals, is darker in color. Granite forms a major part of the continental crust. Basalt is a extrusive felsic igneous rock. It is extrusive because it forms on the earth's surface from magma that has erupted from a volcano, so it cools much faster then granite, and there for doesn't have time to form large crystals. Basalt can also be vesicular extrusive, which means hot gasses got trapped in the formation of the rock and formed holes. Because of this basalt can sometimes appear "frothy" and a little like coral. Basalt makes up most of the ocean floor.
