Chapter Definitions



minerals
naturally occuring, homogenous solid substances that are inorganic

Luster
the way light is reflected from the freshly cut surface of a mineral

streak
the powdered form of the mineral

crystal
a regularly shaped solid formed by an ordered pattern of atoms

Cleavage
how a mineral breaks (good cleavage=clean sheets and vice versa)

Igneous Rocks
formed from cooled lava flow

Sedimentary
formed by buildup and compation of sediment due to erosion and weathering

Metamorphic
formed deep in earth's crust by intense heat and pressure

Intrusive
a rock with large crystals (inside the earth)

Extrusive
a rock with little to no crystals (made at earth's crust)

felsic
light in color

mafic
dark in color

Vesicular
containing many holes created by expanding gas as magna rises to the surface

Foliation
alignment of crystals

banding
separate light and dark layers on a metamorphic rock

rock cycle
a model of natural changes in rocks and rock material
