344 N Michigan Ave

Built by John Wellborn Root, Jr in 1928 and Holabird & Root took commercial residence there.

It is 396 feet (120.7 m) tall, and has 34 stories

John Wellborn Root was famous for incorporating the style of art deco which he also displayed in the Playboy Building, the Chicago Board of Trade Building, Chrysler Building, and the Chicago Daily New Building. Art deco was an art design movement seen as elegant, glamorous and functional.
The building's base is sheathed in polished granite. It’s upper stories are made in buff-colored limestone and dark terra cotta.

Granite: Granite rocks are igneous rocks which were formed by slowly cooling pockets of magma that were trapped beneath the earth's surface. granite always consists of the minerals quartz and feldspar. Granite characteristics include strength and durability. There are hundreds of different granites available.

Limestone: Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of the mineral calcite. Limestone is very common in architecture. Many landmarks across the world, including the Great Pyramid. Most limestone form in shallow, calm, warm marine waters.

Terra Cotta which is clay based: Clay minerals occur widely in such sedimentary rocks as mud stones and shales, in marine sediments, and in soils. Clay is the common name for a number of fine-grained, earthy materials that become plastic when wet. Properties of clay minerals include plasticity, shrinkage under firing and air drying, fineness of grain, color after firing, hardness, cohesion, and capacity of the surface to take decoration.
