Pittsfield Building

1. The Pittsfield building was built in 1929 by a popular architectural firm in chicago, Graham, Anderson, Probst & White.

2. Graham, Anderson, Probst, & White have also built many other well known chicago buildings such as the Wrigley Building, Chicago Union Station, Shedd Aquarium, Merchandise Mart, and Civic Opera Building.

3. The Pittsfield building is made out of limestone on the outside and granite on the inside. The outer surface of the building is composed of ammonoid and belemite fossils in a reddish Alpine Jurassic limestone.

4/5/6. Limestone is a sedimentary rock often produced through chemical or biological activity, such as fossilization. The fossilization of marine organisms is the primary source of the organic mineral that makes up limestone, calcite, or calcium carbonate. Limestone is the only sedimentary rock that reacts vigorously to and is broken down by HCl (Hydrochloric acid).

7/8. During the creation of the pitsfield building in 1927 it was the tallest building in the city of Chicago. It is highly recognized as one of the most intresting arcitectual designs in the city and it is hard to find other buildings like it from its time period. The inside is well known for its glowing marbles, gleaming brass and Spanish Gothic style carvings on the inside. The building is used mostly by doctors, dentists and jewelers A real estate developer has bought the thirteenth through twenty-first floors of the building with plans for a dormitory at a cost of $23 million.
