Tribune Tower


Built by: Raymond M. Hood and John Mead Howells for the firm Howells & Hood
Year: 1925

Building Materials: Steel and Limestone
Limestone: Sedimentary
It contains calcite which reacts with HCl, it tends to be a gray, light brown, or white in color
Formed by deposition and weathering
Historical/architectural significance: The tower influenced the design of The Grace Building in Sydney, Australia and the Manchester Unity Building in Melbourne, Australia.
The lowest levels of the building contain rocks from many historically significant buildings and places throughout the world including: The Taj Mahal, The Parthenon, The Great Pyramid of Giza, The Alamo, Notre-Dame, Abraham Lincoln’s tomb, The Great Wall of China and the Berlin Wall.
Interesting facts: The scenes from The Dark Knight that take place in the Bat Cave, were filmed in thebasement of the tower. The building was also featured in two episodes of CSI: New York.
