Pompeii

Pompeii

Robert Harris

Initially, I was attracted to this book due to my desire to read a novel in lieu of a textbook. Fortunately, it fulfilled my expectations and the fictional aspects made the reading very enjoyable. Robert Harris admitted excerpts of other people’s research to parallel what was occurring in the book. Due to this, I was able to compare what the characters were experiencing to the scientific explanation of what was occurring. I appreciated the novel’s inclusion of the Italian culture with Roman control. In addition to obtaining information regarding volcanic eruptions, I now have a greater understanding of the government, religious and spiritual beliefs, technology and social aspects including family life and social classes during this time period. Unfortunately, for this assignment I think the goal was to retain more of a scientific background specific to one subject. With that consideration this book lacked a sufficient amount of new information. Overall, I am very impressed with Robert Harris’ novel, Pompeii.
