Book Review
Outlining In Defense of Food, Michael Pollan uses seven simple words: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” Pollan criticizes both the western diet and the uprising of “Nutrisionism.” Currently, Americans are focusing too much on nutrients, which are replacing “real” food in supermarkets across the country. Replacing the fresh produce and natural products, are packaged “food like substances” containing misleading health claims. According to Pollan, American’s obsession with healthy eating is actually doing more harm then good. Reducing food to its nutritional components is not an affective method of gaining the proper nutrients. Food should be enjoyed and consumed as a whole. Pollan argues to spend more money on food, which will ensure that less is eaten and that the food is of better quality. Throughout the book, Michael Pollan makes a compelling argument that everyone should read.
