Wednesday, October 7

Class started today with a brief discussion about the "scribe". Ms. Meyer passed out a sheet that has everyone's names on it, with the goal being for everyone to check the blog to see who has written so far and then cross those names off the list. That way, when it comes time for you to be the scribe, you will know who has not written yet.

Next, we discussed the previous night's homework, which was the "Do we take minerals for granted?" article. We also filled out an article response. The main questions addressed in this discussion were:
-what is a mineral?
-how do we get minerals?
-how do we come in contact with minerals on a daily basis?
-when are we going to run out of minerals?
The class in conclusion unanimously agreed that minerals are extremely important and that we do take them for granted.

Lastly, we took notes on rocks on a handout. It makes sense that we have transitioned from minerals to rocks because rocks are composed of minerals. It is essential that we understand minerals before we understand rocks. Some highlights:
-rocks are classified by how they are formed and their origin
-there are three major rocks groups (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic)
-igneous rocks are classified by their grain size and mineral content
-grain size is either intrusive or extrusive
-mineral composition can be felsic or mafic

Remember that tomorrow we have a quiz! Ms. Meyer is going to give us two minerals that we previously encountered in Tuesday's lab and we are going to have to identify them using the same techniques. Also, remember to get your consent forms signed for Ms. Meyer's grad school project (handed out at the very end of class-make sure you got both sheets!).

Tomorrow's scribe will be Jacqueline.

Here's a video that helps explain the difference between rocks and minerals...
