I read an interesting article about new studies in to whale songs. It turns out that male humpback whales change the melody of their songs when they encounter another whale. It is not yet understood exactly why they sing, but that is one thing scientists hope to gather from these experiments. This new line of experimentation is being conducted with newer technology that was just adapted from being used to analyse bird singing, and seems to be working very well. Researchers hope they can learn the reasoning both for why they change their tunes, and why they sing in the first place.
