Stromboli Explosion

On November 8, 2009 Stromboli Volcano in Italy had a major explosion, blowing out part of the eastern flank of the cinder cone.  The explosion came from the vents in the central crater zone.  The explosion produced gas and ash that blew out more than 350 meters high to begin with and was followed by a strong lava flow that erupted from the central vent.  The vent had grown since the explosion began due to the extreme pressure of ash flowing out.  The lava flow spread throughout the crater on the surface of the volcano and covered an area of 60 meters in length.  Eventually, the flowing stopped and the explosion activity weakened until it was calm again.  These little eruptions happen frequently (about every few months) and will eventually lead to a bigger explosion.
