The Botany of Desire

I found this book to be very interesting. It connects four iconic plants to specific desires. The apple is connected to sweetness. In this segment of the book the author explores in great lengths the life of Johnny Appleseed. The desire connected with the tulip is beauty. Michael Pollan (the author) talks about the quest to find the perfect tulip, and how at different points in time different styles of tulips were classified as beautiful. Pollan then connects marijuana to the desire of intoxication. He claims that every person has the desire to change or alter their mental state. He also discusses how growing of marijuana has changed over the past decades. The final segment relates the potato to the desire control.
This book was interesting to read. The author drew connections between plants and my everyday life that I had not noticed before. However, it was a little bit dry to read in some areas. At certain points in the novel the point made by the author was interesting, but there was too much content on certain aspects of the plant. Overall, I enjoyed this novel. But, I would caution anyone who is considering reading this book; it is a lot of material on plants!
