The Rarest Gem

After the discussion we had to day, it got me thinking about the rarity of diamonds.  Even the smallest of diamonds are extremely expensive and extremely rare.  But in fact, there are a few minerals that have higher rarity.  The rarest is Painite.  Painite is pink, red, and brown in color.  As of 2005, there were only eighteen known specimens in the world.  They have been found in Mogok and Kachin State, both of which in Myanmar.  Other gems that are more rare than diamond include Serendibite, Grandidierite, Majorite, and Benitoite.

  1. I found this post to be very interesting because everyone assumes that diamonds are the most rare mineral. To find out that there is something even rarer is fascinating to me!
