The Jurassic period lasted from 206 million years ago to 144 million years ago, during the Mesozoic era. At this time most of the continents were still joined together in a super continent know as Pangea. However throughout this time period, Pangea started to split into two smaller continents known as Laurasia and Gondwanaland.
Plant life flourished during this time period. Ferns, Ginkgoes, and Cycadeoids covered the Earth’s continents. This provided plenty of food sources for the herbivores that dominated the planet. Most of the dinosaurs during that time period were giant and plant eating.
Ironically, many of the dinosaurs that are featured in the popular movie Jurassic Park, did not evolve until after the Jurassic period ended. There were carnivores during this time, but not like the t-rexes you would imagine. The carnivorous dinosaurs in the Jurassic period were smaller than that, but don’t be fooled they were very vicious.
During the Jurassic period, fish filled the ocean, vertebrates began to fly, and dinosaurs dominated the Earth. The largest dinosaurs were the gigantic sauropods. In the sea were cephalopods. Cephalopods are the relatives of modern day squids, nautilus and octipi. The Jurassic period was an exciting time on Earth, as animal life began to take control of the planet.
