Crusts

When learning about Earth's structure, its important to learn the difference between the two types of crust. First, the continental crust. This crust is made of granite. It is older and thicker than the oceanic crust and has a density of 2.8g/cm3. THe oceanic crust is made of basalt. These rocks are younger. It is important to remember that these rocks are MORE dense than the granite that makes up the continental crust. The density of the oceanic basalt is 2.9g/cm3. Both crusts are part of the Mantel, specifically the lithosphere. The lithosphere contains the crust as well as the upper part of the mantel.
