Volcano News

Italy is getting a lot of volcanic action! Besides the volcanoes going off in Italy, there is a volcano in Columbia, the Galeras volcano, that seems to be getting close to eruption. According to a short article I read, seismic activity has increased dramatically over the past 2 weeks. The geologic institute of Columbia, INGEOMINAS, warned people that an eruption will occur soon. The Galeras volcano is located near the border of Ecuador, and is a part of the Andes. The city that surrounds the volcano has a population of 300,000. The volcano has erupted 20 times since the 16th century; its most recent eruption occurred 2008. 8,000 people had to evacuate the city. In 1993 and killed nine people, including 5 scientists. Hopefully everyone is warned early enough so they'll be able to move out of the way once this volcano explodes!
