"The World Without Us" by Alan Weisman

The book, The World Without Us, by Alan Weisman, was a truly great book. Although it's a bit on the longer side with 275 pages, every single page was packed in with important information. I wouldn't be able to shorten this book one page! The main topic of the book was focusing on what effects humans have had on the Earth, and what will happen to all of our man made structures and materials when we leave. Alan Weisman discusses this topic very deeply, covering every aspect of the impact of humans on the environment you could ever imagine. Some examples of how specific Mr. Weisman gets include: exploring their effects on mosquitos, their effects on species specific in only certain parts of Africa, and their effects on levels of certain metallic elements in the soil over many decades. He also goes over the demise of specific man made buildings, like the entire Manhattan underground subway (and eventually the whole city itself), or the poisonous power of lead which will remain in the environment for thousands of years after humans die. The book was very hard hitting because it shows just how much damage we have brought upon the Earth, and how hard it has been for the plants and animals we live with to adapt to the changes we bring upon them. I would recommend this book to anyone who feels strongly about the topic of the environment.

  1. Forgot to add.. Good sections to focus on if you ever do read this book: Part 1, Chapter 5 (titled The City Without Us);Part 2, Chapters 7,8,9 and 10 (Titled What Lasts, What Falls Apart, Polymers are Forever, and The Petro Patch); and lastly, Part IV chapter 19 (titled The Sea Cradle). These sections were definitely the most interesting out of the whole book!
