Unit Review

My unit review is about stuff that I didn't have direct notes on, which was hot spots and paleomagnetism.

Paleomagnetism:

-is... the study of the record of the earth's magnetic field as is preserved in various minerals throughout time.
-Through tracking magnetic strength and direction we can prove that the magnetic field exists, and reverses.
-Helps prove continental drift because they record the time that the rocks have formed via their magnetic strength at the time. This proves that rocks nearer to oceanic ridges are younger, and new rocks are forming, thus the sea floor is spreading and the continents are drifting.

Hotspots:
-are... a location on the earth's surface that has experienced volcanism for a long period of time.
-The ocean floor slowly slides over the hotspots, thus creating islands over a long period of time.
-Form islands such as Hawaiian, Galapagos, Iceland, Canary, and Yellowstone.
