Theory of Plate Tectonics

Continental Drift:
- Large scale movements of continents over the globe.

Evidence for continental drift:
- Continents fit together like a puzzle
-Similar geologic features
-Similar fossil records
-Volcanoes and Earthquakes follow ridges where continents split apart
-Monitoring distances between continents, they are changing; sea floor is spreading in same areas.

Plates are located on the lithosphere.

There are 3 different types of plate boundaries: Convergent, Divergent, and Transform.

-Convergent plates are when two plates are moving towards one another.  Convergent plates can either subduct (one plate goes beneath the other), or collide.
-Divergent plates are when two plates are moving away from one another.
-Transform plates are when plates grind up against one another.

Seafloor spreading:

-When two plates diverge, rocks break apart and a crack forms between the plates.
-Magma seeps between cracks and solidifies on ocean floor.
