In 1842, Sir Richard Owen came up with the name dinosaur which means "fearfully great lizard" in Greek. Newly discovered dinosaurs can either be named by the discoverer, or the paleontologist who recognizes that the dinosaur is a new species. A dinosaur is often given a name that represents something unique about its body, head or feet. Dinosaurs are also often named after the place they were discovered, a particular behavior, their size or can even be named in someone's honor. To become official, a dinosaurs name must be approved by
the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature.
